What does this mean?

We have received a letter from previous oncologist appointment and the Diagnosis reads as T3N3mx/0 small cell lung cancer.
we understand most of the ratings. Had the vast majority explained and understand fully the situation and what is ahead of us.
But we are confused about the ‘mx/0’part.
can anyone help or explain why the doctor has written this and what it means.
many thanks

  • Hi DorisLydia

    Thanks for getting in touch.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line

Welcome to the online community. I can see you have joined several cancer forums. I hope you’re finding it helpful talking to others.

It is always good to receive letters from oncologist explaining the diagnosis and the treatment plan. However it can be a little confusing when they use terminology that you’re unfamiliar with.

The T3N3mx/0 describes the cancer staging which includes the size of the tumour T3, how many nodes involved N3 and the Mx/0 indicates there is no evidence the cancer has spread anywhere else or it can’t be measured. Sometimes they just use M0 but on this occasion they have used mx/0.

I hope this information is helpful and has given you a better understanding of the diagnosis. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if there is anything else that we can help you with. We are available 7 days a week 8am to 8pm on 0808 808 0000.

  • Hello Paula.

thank you for responding, I couldn’t find any information anywhere what the mx/0 meant.

he has since been scanned and we know it has spread to his bones.

    thank you again
