I had a second resection two weeks ago and wonder how long the red colouration in my urine will continue for. I’m drinking plenty of water during the day and my urine is ok but when I wake up in the morning the contents of my night bag are dark rose

  • Dear Chuck,

Thank you for getting in touch and welcome to our online community, I hope you find it supportive. My name is Jo and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Noticing some blood in your urine during the first two weeks after a bladder resection can be quite normal. You are doing the right thing by keeping hydrated. These symptoms are expected to settle down after a while. We would recommend contacting your hospital team or specialist nurse (if you have one) to talk about the dark rose contents of your overnight bags. They would want to know what is happening and may be able to provide further advice and reassurance.

As a member of our Online Community, you are able to access and interact on the Bladder Cancer forum. Sometimes being able to share experiences with others in similar situations can be invaluable. Our forums offer this type of support.

I hope this information is helpful but if you have any more questions please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Best wishes,

    Jo, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
