Can someone please give me some advice. I’m at my wits end. I had a planned phone call for next week for the results of my scan ( last chemo was 21 st Nov ) I’ve now had a call saying the call is cancelled & my oncologist wants to see me face to face instead. I’m thinking it’s very bad news & can’t cope. Has this happened to anyone before & what was the outcome. Many thanks for any help.

  • Hi Fee27,

Thanks very much for getting in touch with us and welcome to our Online Community. I see from your profile you have joined our breast cancer and ovarian cancer forum; I hope you find them supportive.

It’s understandable to think the worst after a telephone appointment has been changed to a face to face appointment. This is when all the what if’s come into mind.

However, there could be many reasons for this happening such as your consultant wanting to see you in person for a clinical assessment, which can’t be done over the telephone.

I appreciate it can be easier said than done but try not to over think why this has been done and keep yourself busy. Many people we speak to in a similar situation find this can help them pass the time quickly while they are waiting for an appointment. Unfortunately you don’t have any control just now while you are waiting, but you do on how you spend your time until your next appointment.

In the meantime, it might be helpful to write down questions to help you get the most out of your appointment. Taking someone with you to your appointment is also a good idea, not only for support but to help you remember what your consultant has said.

Although the nurses on the support line are separate from the NHS and don’t have access to your medical records, we would be more than happy to listen and chat things through with you if you ever want to talk.

I hope this information is helpful, but please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if there’s anything else we can help you with.

    Best wishes and take care,

    Sarah (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
