Hello, I’ve just started oral chemo. Tumour found on my gallbladder. Had G/bladder removed, part of liver and surrounding lymph nodes.. on 6 months on chemo capecitabine precautionary measure. As a Xmas gift I was given a voucher for a spa day.  Is it okay to have a massage?
Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Bossy

    Thanks for getting in touch.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line

Welcome to the online community. I can see you have joined several cancer forums. I hope you’re finding it helpful talking to others.

I trust that you have recovered from your extensive cancer surgery and are coping with your oral chemotherapy. Please let your team know of any difficulties with side-effects of treatment.

What a lovely thoughtful gesture receiving a spa voucher as a Christmas gift. Having a spa day and a massage can be very beneficial and can be good for well-being.

I can understand your concern about using your spa voucher whilst on chemotherapy. Although it should be safe to visit a spa there are some things to consider whilst on cancer treatment.

We would suggest speaking to your team before you visit the spa. They are in an ideal position to advise you especially about using pools, saunas, and steam rooms during therapy. Some cancer treatments can lower your immunity and increase your risk of getting an infection.

Chemotherapy can also cause skin sensitivity. The spa therapist might also need to adapt their regime to accommodate your needs. We would recommend speaking to the spa that you intend visiting so they are aware of your current situation. Some spas give their therapists specialist training in supporting people with cancer. You may find this link useful to refer to regarding registered therapists.

I hope this information is helpful and hasn’t put you off visiting the spa. Go and enjoy the gift. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if there is anything else that we can help you with. We are available 7 days a week 8am to 8pm on 0808 808 0000.
