My husband has been told he has grade 2 prostate cancer Gleason 3&4. That’s all he was told & just to wait for a bone scan. I thought grade 2 meant it was contained within prostate?
Wouldn’t the MRI have shown up any problems with bones? We’re confused

  • Hi S67,

Thank you for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Sharon and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists. There is some information on our website about staging and grading of prostate cancer. When the doctors are looking at the diagnosis of prostate cancer they look at the stage and grade, the Gleason Score and PSA result. The doctors follow NICE guidelines when planning investigations or treatment. With a Gleason score of 7 and above then they may recommend a bone scan to look for any disease in the bones. An MRI scan might have shown disease in the bones, but they may not have scanned the whole body. There is more information on different types of scan on the prostate cancer UK website which you might find useful.

Your husband should have a Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Hospital in the Urology Team and they would be able to explain why your husband is having the different tests and scans. They are there to support you with his diagnosis.

I hope that is helpful. You can always give us a call. On our helpline we offer a range of support where you can talk through what’s going on and how you’re feeling. If you would like to talk through your concerns, we are available 7 days a week from 8am-8pm on 0808 808 0000

    Take Care,

    Sharon C
