Side effects of medication

I have been taking letrozole for 8 months and adcal D3 for about 3 months. For the last couple of months, my arms have started going dead during the night. Recently my fingers have occasionally been going blue and tingly, and my finger joints are puffy. I mentioned the arm problem at my recent 6 month review and was told it was probably nerve damage following my mastectomy/ radiotherapy, but at that stage it was only on the one side where I had been operated on. Now both arms and hands are equally affected. Do you think this is a side effect of my medication, or am I just getting old and arthritic? I am 72. I am not in pain, but not sure if I should be worried!!

  • Hello Northyorkshirelass,

Thanks for getting in touch. I can see from your profile that you’ve joined our online breast cancer forum and having been supporting others there.

I can appreciate you would like to know what could be causing the symptoms you describe.

As nurses on the Macmillan Support Line, we unfortunately can’t say what could be causing your symptoms.

We would always recommend that new, changing, or worsening symptoms are assessed, especially as yours have changed since you were last at the clinic.

You should tell your doctor straight away that your fingers have occasionally been going blue and tingly.

There are a few conditions which can cause these symptoms, but you need to be examined.

Bluish skin discolouration can be a sign that a blood clot may have formed. This is listed as a rare, serious side effect of letrozole.

If you can’t speak to a doctor today, you should contact 111.

    I hope this helps.

    Sending best wishes,

Carole – Cancer Information Nurse Specialist

  • Thank you! Managed to see GP this afternoon. She said she would have to write to consultant to check where a blood clot could be & see if I needed more scans. Said if it was in one arm then both arms wouldn't go blue, if it was in a central position then I would have more serious symptoms than blue hands. She has referred me for non urgent blood tests, to check especially for vit B deficiency.
