Male cystoscopy and pain/discomfort after ejaculation

Hi.

After a successful surgery on my bladder cancer in Feburary,  I have been receiving cystoscopy check ups every 6 months. All is good except the burning/sharp scratch like irritation around prostate after ejaculation. Sometimes this happens after just having an erection. Also, when erection is sustained for longer and more intensely, greater the discomfort becomes afterwards. I also experience irritation across pubic bone.

I wonder if this is known among male patients and would like to know why and what can be done to ease the discomfort. As you can imagine, I would like to resume my life as normal as I could but this is affecting my psychologically and beginning to feel a bit scared to have any sexual activities because of the after effects.

Your help and advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Hi Cystoscopy

Welcome to the Online Community here at Macmillan. I hope you find it a helpful place to access support and ask questions. My name is Vanessa and I am one of the information nurses.

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing pain. Unfortunately, Bladder cancer and its treatment can also have an affect on sex and relationships.

Regarding orgasm associated pain, there is some interesting information in this article from the National Library of Medicine. It is quite a detailed article but does talk about excluding infection, inflammation and a potential link with some medication, particularly anti-depressants and some muscle relaxants.

If you have not done so already, we would suggest talking to your treatment team in more detail about the symptoms you are experiencing. There are some useful tips about talking to your treatment team here.

Establishing the cause of the pain will enable your team to formulate a treatment plan.

I do hope you find this information helpful.

    Best wishes

    Vanessa, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
