I am 6 weeks post BCC removal operation. The BCC was by my nose, under my eye so my scar runs the full length of my eye down the side of my nose and then diagonally down almost to my mouth. My surgeon has recommended Kelo-Cote gel during the day and silicone gel strips during the night. He also recommended massaging the scar 4 times a day - which I’ve been doing for a couple of weeks so far with Vaseline. My question is how do i massage with Vaseline or Bio Oil when I’ve got the Kelo-Cote gel over the scar?

  • Hi Binny,

My name is Liz and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurse specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Thank you for reaching out to us for information about massaging your scar over KELO-COTE post BCC removal.

The information that I can find on KELO-COTE states that “KELO-COTE® self-dries within 5 minutes* forming a flexible, waterproof, transparent** layer – remove any excess product if it does not dry completely. Once dry, sunblock and cosmetics can be applied.”

This information would suggest that products can be used on top of KELO-COTE however I can’t confirm if vaseline or Bio Oil are specifically suitable.

I would suggest that you speak to either your dermatologist or your local dermatology clinical nurse specialist (CNS) for further advice. Your surgeon’s secretary should have the contact details for the CNS if you haven’t got them.

I hope this information has been helpful.

    Take care.
