I had an op.for oral cancer July 6th then radiotherapy 30 sessions. Over the past few weeks I have noticed stinging after brushing teeth - now my mouth is very sore with ulcers and I wonder if it could be the toothpaste. I have also had horrible neuralgia keeping me awake at night - does this settle down? Any advise gratefully received.

  • Hi Hamishmax

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community.

Good to hear you’ve finished your treatment for oral cancer. However, I am sorry to hear you’re experiencing a sore mouth and horrible neuralgia. I can imagine how difficult it must be for you.

It’s not uncommon to develop late effects after completing cancer treatment and it may not necessarily be due to the toothpaste your using. Radiotherapy can cause changes to the lining of the mouth and the salivary glands. This can upset the healthy bacteria in the mouth and can lead to mouth sores, infections, or tooth decay. Even small changes in your diet or feeling run down can also cause the symptoms you are experiencing.

Good oral hygiene is really important when you have a sore mouth. Duraphat 500 toothpaste is normally used for to help prevent tooth decay and it contains fluoride. We would suggest speaking to your dentist or a pharmacist before using it, as it can sometimes cause a mild irritation to the mucous membrane. They might suggest something else to use.

The neuralgic pain you’re having may be due to the healing process, scar tissue tightening or possibly nerve damage because of your surgery.

We would recommend seeing your GP or your cancer team for a check up to assess the neuralgic pain and your oral problems. They are in an ideal position to prescribe something to help with your oral problems. Especially if you have an infection and they can manage your pain more effectively. They can also refer you to a pain team if required.
