1A or 1B melanoma

  • Hi there

I have recently been diagnosed with stage 1B melanoma. When I originally got my diagnosis I was told that my case was reviewed by a team of specialists who said that even though my melanoma was 0.5mm deep, because it was ulcerated that has brought it up to a stage 1B rather that 1A. I was given all the information specific to stage 1B and informed about the SLNB.

A few months later I have now been told that my case was reviewed again by a team of specialists (I'm not sure if it was the original team or different people this time) who have now said that I am stage 1A because the ulceration isn't full thickness.

This change in diagnosis really has confused me. I don't know what to think and I don't know what stage I am. When I look online it says if there is ulceration it is stage 1B. Why would the thickness of the ulceration not have been mentioned originally as that was a big marker in the staging.

Any advice or guidance would be really appreciated as this is causing me a lot of anxiety. Thanks
