Polycythemia Vera

Hi,

I live in Spain and I have recently been diagnosed with Polycythemia Vera. My notes say JAK 2 negative. I´ve been prescribed Hydrea.

My diagnosis was just done through blood tests and not a bone marrow biopsy. I just wanted to double check that a sound diagnosis can be made without the bone marrow biopsy? I´m concerned about being prescribed chemo if it is possible that I have Polycythemia and not Polycythemia Vera.

Not sure if it is relevant but I´m female, over 60 and have a history of thrombosis.

Thank you.

  • Hello,

I’m Gail one of the Macmillan Cancer Information Nurse Specialists. Thanks for getting in touch with the Macmillan Online Community.

We are unable to guide you on health systems outside of the UK.  It will be beneficial for you to discuss your query with the medical team looking after you and they can explain why they have not requested a bone marrow biopsy.

There is useful information on diagnosing polycythaemia vera available from Blood Cancer UK and Cancer Research UK.

The types of tests offered are based on individual circumstances, so understanding how your medical team has come to their decision will be useful for you as you move forward with your treatment plan.

Please get back in touch if you need any further information.

    Best Wishes,

    Gail
