  • Hello Grete,

I’m Gail one of the Macmillan Cancer Information Nurse Specialists. Thanks for getting in touch with the Macmillan Online Community.

The hospital team looking after your husband will provide any relevant information you need to follow if there’s a risk to family members, due to his treatment.

You don’t mention what type of radiotherapy your husband is receiving but special precautions are associated with internal radiotherapy and radioactive liquid treatmentsExternal radiation does not create a risk to others.

Precautions related to chemotherapy treatment involve the management of body fluids for 48-72 hours after chemotherapy is given.

The main risk from radiotherapy and chemotherapy is for your husband as his immune system will be compromised. It is important family members/visitors who are unwell should avoid visiting your husband until they are better. People living in the household should be prioritised for Covid vaccination.  Your husband will also benefit from close family members having a flu jab as this can help reduce his risk of infection.

    Best Wishes,

    Gail
