Lymphoma question

I have feelable submandibular, submental and cervical lymph nodes. They’re just below 1/2 an inch and they’re mobile and non painful. I have had them for over 2 years now. I also have no symptoms or signs of any infections and I also have no symptoms of lymphoma. Why may these node be feelable? I’m just looking for a bit of reassurance because on Google it says if a lymph node is swollen for more than 2 weeks then it’s a concern. I’m also very slim.

  • Hi Bradley,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support with your concerns.

I’m Ursula, one of the cancer information nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.
You mentioned you have been searching on google for information. We would strongly advise against this as there is often mis-information online with no evidence base.  This in turn could cause worry and anxiety.

There can be different causes for enlarged lymph nodes and these are not always cancer. I wonder if you have been examined by your GP?

Lymph nodes are usually too small to feel.  However, you mentioned you are slim and in some cases they can be felt in slim people as smooth pea sized lumps.

Lymph nodes can also become palpable when infection is present, but you say you have no signs or symptoms of infection and you have felt these for over two years now.

This platform cannot diagnose you as we don’t have access to your health records or test results.

We would therefore advise that if you have a new symptom, a symptom that persists, gets worse or is changing then you must seek an appointment with your GP.
They can carry out a lymph node examination if appropriate.

I hope you find this information helpful.

    Best wishes

  • Would it be unlikely for this to be cancerous though as the nodes haven't changed in 2 years and since I have no symptoms of lyphoma apart from just the nodes?

  • Hi Bradley,

Im afraid it’s not possible for us to say if these nodes are cancerous or not.  As said previously, there can be different causes for enlarged lymph nodes aside from cancer.

As nurses on this platform, we are unable to diagnose you.  We would again, advise that you speak with your GP if you have any new, persistent, worsening or changing symptoms.

    Best wishes,
