Hi, I am about to start my chemo next Friday Capecetabinefor 8 cycles after a bowel resection 10 weeks ago.

I also have arthritis in my hip and I usually have a steroid injection in my hip over winter.  Would this be something that I can do?

  • Hi kiwimel,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the Online Community.

I can appreciate your questioning whether you are still able to have a steroid injection for arthritis in your hip whilst having capecitabine chemotherapy.

Managing treatment for your cancer along with another chronic condition such as arthritis can be a challenge.  Whilst steroid injections  can be useful in treating hip pain caused by the arthritis, they can have side-effects and may interact with medications used in your cancer treatment.

We would therefore advise that you speak to your hospital team. They are in the best place to answer any specific questions as they are familiar with your cancer treatment and have access to your medical records. If you have the contact number for a nurse specialist within the team you could give them a call in the first instance.

I hope that your chemotherapy goes well. However, if you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to get back in touch. You can speak with the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or send us an email

    Best wishes,
