Hi I want to have my mastectomy carried out by a surgeon in a different trust. Can I choose? Will they see me if I am out of area?

Hi Helena
Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community.
My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line
I’m sorry to hear you’re wanting to change your surgical team. You’re not alone in thinking this way and this does occasionally happen.
There are different ways to request a transfer of care to another hospital trust. We would encourage you to speak to your current team including the CNS (if you have one) about your concerns.
You could consider getting g a second opinion which will enable you to speak to another consultant. This can give you reassurance about the current clinical decisions being made about your care or offer a different option. Your current consultant or GP can do this referral for you.
It may be also worth contacting Breast Cancer Now as they are in an ideal position to give further advice regarding your concerns.
I hope this information is helpful, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if there is anything else, we can help you with. We are available 7 days a week 8am to 8pm on 0808 808 0000. You can also get back in touch here.

Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
