I've been taking Letrozole for 7 weeks and I've had two different brands. In the last few days I've had several mouth ulcers and I can't remember having them since I was a child. Is this one of the side effects with Letrozole and is there something I can do about it?

  • Hi

Welcome to the Online Community here at Macmillan. I hope you find it a helpful place to access support and ask questions. My name is Vanessa and I am one of the information nurses.

Letrozole is a hormonal drug used to treat breast cancer. Sores, ulcers or white spots on the lips or in the mouth are listed as side effects of letrozole although not highlighted as common side effects.

The NHS website information about letrozole states that if you are having frequent mouth ulcers or sore throats you should seek medical advice without delay as it could be a sign of a low white blood cell count. To get medical advice you could contact your specialist nurse, GP or 111.

Whilst obtaining medical advice you could also ask for medication or mouthwashes which may be available to try and make your mouth more comfortable.

For day to day care of your mouth Cancer Research UK also have some advice regarding mouth care, towards the bottom of the page is a section on treating mouth sores and infection.

I hope you find this information helpful. You can also always call one of our nurses directly if you want to talk over your concerns or require any further support.

     Take care
