Hello. I finished my breast cancer treatment in late 2020. And am on Letrozole for 5 years.  My question is after mastectomy and chemotherapy both neo adjuvant and then Paclitaxel, am I  still classed as immune compromised.  I want to book spring booster but not sure if eligible. I am 64 so would only be eligible if classed as immune compromised.
I have just had shingles so I guess this is an immunity issue so should I request a letter from GP for spring booster on grounds of being immune compromised?  Thanks.

  • Hello krysiatennis

Thank you for getting in touch, and welcome to our online community. I’m Annerose one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan support line.

I understand your concerns about coronavirus vaccines while taking Letrozole.

Treatment for breast cancer are known to have a negative effect on the way our immune system responds to infection, however hormone therapies do not usually affect the immunsystem.

In rare instances,1 in 100 people or in 1% of people taking Letrozole, it can cause a drop in white blood cells. Your breast cancer team or GP will be able to advise if you fall in the 1% category by checking your full blood count.

Your GP or your team can then put your name forward if necessary, to book your vaccination appointment.

I hope this information has been helpful.

    Best wishes and take care
