Anastazole

I am one year in from lumpectomy if 22mm tumour right breast,  no need for chemo but radiotherapy.  Was put onto letrazole but joint pain and abdominal pain so transferred to Anasrazole approx 6 months ago.  I now have pain in my finger,  thumb and shoulder joints.  The knuckles on my right hand especially  are visibly swollen and I can't wear any of my rings. Is this swelling damaging the joints?  Will it go back to normal when I come off the Anasrazoke in 4 years (approx)?

My hair is also falling out is there anything I can do to stop this or limit the damage?

Also my right breast still feels very bruised under the breast tissue and it continues to shrink in size.  My bra now moves across my chest and sits with the cup in the centre of my chest.  Can you recommend a bra that would balance the size of my breasts that isn't too clinical.  I have sports bras which are fine for everyday but it would be nice to feel feminine when I go somewhere  special.

Thank you

  • Dear Kizxy,

Thank you for getting in touch. My name is Penelope and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear that you are having side effects from anastrozole. As you are probably aware anastrozole can cause joint pain. Breast Cancer Now have further information on coping with the side effects of anastrozole. We would also suggest you speak to your breast care team or GP for further advice

Unfortunately, hair loss can also be a side effect of anastrozole. Breast Cancer Now have general advice to limit hair loss at point 5. in this link. There are also organisations such as Cancer Hair Care and Look Good Feel Better that can offer further information and support.

We would suggest that you speak to a breast care nurse about the bruised feeling that you mentioned and the change in your breast shape. They may also be able to offer specific underwear advice based on your individual circumstances. For more general advice Breast Cancer Now have information on suppliers of bras and lingerie with plenty of feminine styles available. Some shops have experienced bra fitters who have had specialist training in helping women who have had breast surgery.

Whilst it is not a substitute for medical advice you may find our breast cancer forum helpful to read about how other people have adapted to body changes following their treatment and side effects of hormone therapy. Breast Cancer Now also offer their Moving Forward course for support following breast cancer treatment.

I hope this information is helpful for you.

    Best wishes

    Penelope, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
