HRT after hysterectomy for endometrial cancer

Over a year ago, I had a total hysterectomy and BSO for endometrial cancer, FIGO Stage1a Grade 1. No further treatment required. To what extent might the chances of my cancer coming back be increased by taking HRT? Please could you advise me where online I can find the very latest research that I could read, and what questions I should ask my doctor.

    Hello Jessie33,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the Macmillan Online Community.

I’m Elise, one of the cancer information nurses.

I can see that you’ve joined the womb cancer forum and I hope you find the support there helpful.

This article in particular, has collated evidence that was published up to 2017 and summaries their finding as follows” Limited, very‐low certainty, evidence suggests that HRT may have little or no effect on the risk of endometrial cancer returning for women who have been treated surgically for an early‐stage endometrial cancer. There were no data to say whether HRT had an effect on overall survival after hysterectomy for endometrial cancer.”

In terms of questions to ask your doctor, we would suggest focusing your questions around your specific cancer history and risk factors as the evidence suggests “The risk and benefits of HRT should be evaluated for all women who undergo a premature menopause as a result of gynaecological malignancy to reduce menopausal symptoms and protect against cardiovascular and skeletal morbidity. There is no evidence to suggest a higher rate of disease recurrence in women using HRT in comparison to nonusers in the majority of gynaecological malignancies.”

The British Gynaecological Society have published these guidelines which include recommendations for follow up care.

I hope this information is helpful.

    Best wishes

    Elise,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
