Hi there - i understand that i cannot shave under my arm following lymph node removal 3 weeks ago. I just wanted to confirm that electric razors and/or hair removal cream are ok?

Also - can I use a non scented aerosol deodorant?   I have tried using a roll on and find it really difficult to get on with.

Thanks

  • Hi LizzieMIllie,

My name is Liz and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurse specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Thank you for contacting us for information about hair removal and deodorants after axillary node removal.

I can see that you have joined the breast cancer forum, I hope that this online community provides you with good support.

There are things you can do to lower your chances of getting lymphoedema. We would recommend that you use an electric razor to shave under your arm as they are gentler on the skin. If you consider using depilatory cream, it’s important to check first if you are sensitive or allergic to it and that your wound is completely healed.

In relation to using deodorants post operatively there are limited guidelines, therefore  I would suggest speaking with your clinical nurse specialist for specific instructions as your surgeon may have his/her own preferences and instructions.

I hope this information has been helpful .If you have any further questions, please get in touch by email, webchat or phone. The Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial and emotional support.
