What is the research or advice about having a bilateral mastectomy with one needed but bilateral possible

  • Hi ,

Welcome to our online community and thank you for posting your question.

Many people consider have a bilateral mastectomy when diagnosed with breast cancer in one side. There are several factors that get considered when specialists decide on the most appropriate treatment, so this makes your question a tricky one to answer.

Sometimes a contralateral risk reducing mastectomy (CRRM or CM)  is recommended to reduce the overall risk of getting a second primary breast cancer in the future. But more often, it is at the request of the patient.

The Association of Breast Surgery UK have produced this summary that states:

“The majority of women who request a contralateral mastectomy for unilateral cancer either at the time of the index mastectomy or at a later date do so because they overestimate the benefits or misunderstand the rationale for a contralateral mastectomy”

You may find this link has good information and research, as well as things to consider/ questions to ask. Although it is American, it explores the benefits and risks well.

We would always encourage you to get in touch with your breast cancer surgeon and/ or breast care nurse to discuss any questions you have. You can explore the best treatment available for your individual circumstances and what other options may be available and if not/ why not.

If you are not happy with the decision you can consider getting a second opinion. It is important to remember this can sometimes delay a start in treatment which could in turn affect your cancer, so this should be a very carefully considered decision.
