Is Ibrance Safe?

My wife suffers from secondary breast cancer that had invaded her lung. She had been on Ibrance for 3 months now and although her cancer mass is reducing she has suddenly been diagnosed with delirium by hospital staff but now at home a district nurse has assessed her as having either a nuralogical event or a psychotic episode. I tried to get her readmitted to hospital but the admissions registrar wouldn’t agree to this until he had consulted her cancer consultant because he felt Ibrance had had an impact on her current condition. I have researched this but cannot find any such link. She is currently at home and her mental condition is becoming worse. Can anyone help please?

  • Hi Brummie Nick,

Thanks for getting in touch, during what sounds like a difficult and worrying time for both you and your wife.

I’m Kirsty one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the Macmillan support line.

I can understand why you might link your wife’s cancer treatment to her delirium but as you say, there is no mention of this under Ibrance side effects.

Delirium can happen due to several reasons, sometimes just because you are unwell and in hospital. The above link has a section on “what can I do to help”, which I’m hoping will be helpful.

You don’t mention how long since your wife’s diagnosis of delirium. This can take a few weeks to improve and can be more frustrating if there is no obvious cause to treat.

Given that you feel this is getting worse rather than better, please speak to your GP about another assessment. The district nurse may have already updated them, but it is important that they understand any dip in condition.

    Best wishes
