  • Hi Jaxs,

Thank you for getting in touch. I’m Hilary one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the support line.

Zoledronic acid is a type of drug known as a bisphosphonate. It has the brand name Zometa.

It reduces the risk of fractures in cancers that affect the bones, It can also lower high levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcaemia),

Blood calcium levels should always be checked before an infusion of Zoledronic acid is given. If blood calcium levels indicate that a calcium supplement would be recommended, it should be prescribed. This is usually taken in tablet form, as calcium combined with Vitamin D. If you feel concerned that you should been prescribe the Calcium/Vitamin D tablet we would recommend you contact a member of your clinical team at the hospital.

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling very unwell. You don’t mention when you had your first dose. We would recommend you contact your clinical team straight away on the 24-hour support line or the unit where your zoledronic acid was given to let them know exactly what effects you are feeling. They can assess you and advise you.

If you are unable to reach your team at the hospital, then we would recommend you call NHS 111 straight away. If your symptoms worsen you should call 999 explaining what treatment you have had.

    Best wishes

    Hilary, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
