Worried about ovarian cancer

Hi,

Since last Sunday I have been having problems with flatulance and burping. I had a cramp like pain on my left side, which seems to move to the other side, and in addition seem to have a twinge (not pain) around where my ovaries are.

Yesterday, it was on the left side, today on the right.

I stomach is not particularly distended, but feels a little tender (a bit like when you have cystitis).

My stomach is also gurgling, particularly when I have just had something to eat.

I do not seem to pee more, not do I seem to have lost my appetite.

I do seem to be open my bowels more often, although it's not loose. I am post menopausal but have briefly had a slight period type pain, not a cramp more like a dragging effect.

My Mother had breast cancer, so I'm now worried I have ovarian cancer.

I have made an appointment to see my doctor, but can't see him until Monday.

My Dad has just passed away so am not sure if this is stress related.

Have you any advice please?

Thank you

  • Hi Neon

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community.  My name is Hilary and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses at Macmillan.

I’m sorry to read that your Dad has just passed away. This must be a very difficult time for you.

The symptoms that you describe could possibly be attributed various conditions. I can understand how they are causing discomfort. It isn’t possible for us to say what the reasons maybe for your symptoms. We always recommend that if anybody experiences new symptoms they get in touch with there doctor. You have done the right thing by making the appointment with your GP. They will be best placed to assess your symptoms and advise you.

It is natural to feel anxious when worried about symptoms particularly when your Mum had breast cancer. While waiting for an appointment you may find it helps to try and keep busy using distractions to direct your thoughts elsewhere. Here is a link to a website that you may find helpful as you wait.

If your symptoms worsen at all do call your GP or over the weekend call NHS 111. The NHS gives information about when you might need to seek more urgent attention with stomach symptoms, which you can read here.

    Best wishes,

    Hilary, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
