Lump and soreness

Diagnosed with IDC 7/4 this year, I had a breast lumpectomy 26th April and 2 lymph nodes removed, margins good and the cancer had not spread. I started hormone therapy 7 weeks ago ( anastrozole) and have managed well with side effects ( so far !)

I started radiotherapy on Monday this week ( 3 out of 5) sessions now complete.

All my wounds healed up very well and I was dilligent in completing the excercises given post surgery and have kept them up.
This week I have a lump under my arm in armpit , very sore and impacting as I use my arm  and it is also very tender down the right side of my breast. I sm wondering if it is fluid or something worse !

Is this related to Radiotherapy, Hormone Therapy or surgery ?

do i need to get this checked and if so who is best ? surgery consultant , oncologist or radiotherapy team ( all different and i am under 3 different hospitals)

Thank you

  • Hi

Welcome to the Online Community here at Macmillan. My name is Paula and I am one of the information nurses. It’s good to hear that you are managing well with your treatment so far. However, it’s understandable that you are concerned about the lump you have found in your armpit.

It’s difficult to say whether this lump has been caused by any of the treatments, but it is important that you get this checked out as it’s a new symptom. You could give the radiotherapy team a ring as you are currently undergoing treatment with them, or you could contact your specialist nurse if you have one. It’s important that you do this today as they would want to know about any side effects that may have been caused by your treatment. That way they can assess you and give you any guidance on what to do. You may also have a 24-hour treatment advice line number so you could always try that number if it is out of hours when you see this reply.

I hope you find this information helpful. You can also always call one of our nurses directly if you want to talk over your concerns or require any further support.

    Take care
