Hi. I've just received my smear results and have low grade dyskaryosis and positive HPV result. I've been referred for a colposcopy but the waiting time for an appointment is 4 months. I'm considering going private but the procedure is expensive and I don't know whether I'm just panicking and should wait?  My concern is that if there is an issue it may progress before I get the appointment. Can you offer any advice?

  • Hi Poppy1234

Thanks for getting in touch. Welcome to the online community.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

It’s natural to feel panicky about your smear results and having to wait another 4 months for a colposcopy. Waiting for tests can be difficult and I can appreciate the effects it might be having on your wellbeing.

HPV is a common virus that can affect 4 out of 5 people at some point in their lives. It can be divided into low risk or high risk dyskaryosis. Low risk HPV shows minor changes in the cells of the cervix and mostly doesn’t cause any harm.

As you’re aware, the cost of paying for a colposcopy privately can vary depending on the clinic you use and can be covered through private health insurance or self-funding. Also, if you do consider private care you may need to include costing any further follow up appointments that might be required.

It may be worth contacting your colposcopy department to see if there are any earlier appointments coming up, or whether you could be considered for any cancellation appointments within that 4-month period.

While generally speaking the result you have been given is associated with low risk, it is advisable that you talk over any specific concerns with your own GP who is in the best position to provide tailored advice specific to you.

I hope you find the information helpful.
