Hi

I am new to this group

I am on my last 2 sessions of Taxol chemo with 3 weekly treatments of Herceptin.  My hair has started to grow back.  The Herceptin will continue after my chemo has finished.  Will my hair continue to grow whilst I am on Herceptin (Trastuzumab)

Also I understand that you have to be on Herceptin for a year.  Will the 3 weekly treatments of Herceptin that I have been having with the Taxol count towards the year.

Thank you    Sue

  • Hi Sue, Simmo

Thank you for getting in touch with us and welcome to our online community.  My name is Adrienne and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses at Macmillan.

It’s great to hear that your hair has started to grow back.  Most people find that their hair doesn’t start to grow back until after the chemotherapy has finished.  Sometimes your hair can start to grow back between treatments and then fall out again but not always.

Herceptin can cause hair thinning, which usually starts after your first or second cycle.  If your hair is growing back after your chemotherapy has finished, then you may notice that it’s finer or has less volume than before you started your treatment.  However, once your treatment with Herceptin has finished, you should notice your hair becoming thicker again.

If you are having Herceptin for a year, the year usually starts from the first dose so the treatments you’ve been having with the Taxol should count towards the year.  It’s always best to check this with your team as your treatment plan will be individual to you.

I hope this was helpful Sue and wish you all the best with your treatment going forward.

    Take care,

    Adrienne (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
