post mastectomy, removal of all lymph glands and radiotherapy I was prescribed Letrazole, 1 tablet/day for 5 years.  After 4 months I had to stop the medication as having severe pain in joints and muscles mainly my back.   A GP visited and told me it was a spinal problem.  After 4 weeks without the meds, I was put on Exemestane and after 2 weeks, I am having the same pain which I describe 9/10.   Both these meds were to be taken by me 1/day for 5 years.    3 weeks ago when I saw the Oncology Consultant he reckoned that there are 3 very similar meds, Letrarole, Exemestane and I dont have the name of the third one.   His advice to me was that if I started to experience the same symptoms with the Exemestane as I had with with the Letrozole I SHOULD STOP TAKING THE TABLETS and not be prescribed the third option.   I have tried to speak with my breast care nurses, left a message for them but still waiting for a reply.   I am very puzzled by the Oncologist's advice as my breast cancer was the most aggressive type and I think I should be on some kind of medication.

I spoke yesterday to a lady at my local Maggie's centre where I go for the Nordic Walking Group.  She has had symptoms like mine and after the first two meds caused her pain, she was started on Tamoxifen - I understand that everyone's case is different.   At almost 78 years of age I need to know if it is sensible for me to simply stop all cancer medication?   I asked the consultant should I advise him if and when the side effects got to the unbearable stage and he said NO.

Please advise me, if you can.   I have had such great support from Macmillan since I have been on my breast cancer journey.

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing symptoms from the Exemestane that you have been prescribed, and previously the Letrozole. Understandably you are wanting further support around your treatment plan.

It must have been difficult so far if you haven’t been able to talk this through with the breast care nurses. However, it is important that you get some further advice and support from your hospital team and discuss if there are any other possibilities so that you can have clarity on your own situation. Perhaps if you are having difficulty speaking with your breast care nurses you could phone the consultant’s secretary and leave a message with them for the consultant instead.

I hope you find this information helpful. You can also always call one of our nurses directly if you want to talk over your concerns or require any further support.

    Take care
