FLOT side effects

Hi…..I am wondering about a particular (possible) side effect I wondered if you can help shed some light on it…..My husband had his first round of FLOT chemo 11 days ago…he had nausea for a week or so on and off….extremely tired….the oncologist has said he can tweak the chemo slightly next time to hopefully help with that….However, during the last 11 days we find his temperature drops down quite low…his temp is usually about 36.3…but occasionally it drops to 35 or on the odd occasions has gone down to 34.5…..He doesnt feel cold himself but he has what appears to be a Stress response and starts to sweat and go a bit lightheaded….thats the first he knows that something is not right and we do his temperature…The first time this happened (day 3) we phoned the Neutropenia Help and they said he had to go straight  to A&E…We rang 999 and told them we had a red card and it was suspected ‘cold sepsis’…(which is what we had been told to tell them) we waited 8 hours for an ambulance….it was the middle of the night and we live about 30-40 mins away…anyway, he improved very quickly but they said he still needed to go in to be triaged for cold sepsis. In the end, there was no infection and he was sent home again.  But since this has happened on a number of occasions and we now think this is more his body response to the chemo rather than an infection…..We cannot find any information on this sort of side effect?  What are your thoughts?  Many thanks for your help…..

  • Hi

Thanks for getting touch on our online community. My name’s Louise and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses here.

It’s important to report any changes when someone is having treatment. You did the right thing by phoning Neutropenia Help when your husband started experiencing side effects.

Chemotherapy affects the body’s ability to fight infection. This can lead to sepsis which can be life threatening if left untreated. The risk of infection continues throughout the duration of treatment and for some weeks after treatment has finished.

It’s difficult for us to say what may be causing his symptoms. Even though your husband was found not to have an infection when he was seen in A&E, any signs of an infection such as the change in temperature you mention always need to be assessed in case treatment is needed.  We would suggest you phone Neutropenia help straight away, or 111. The main thing is you get to speak with someone.

    Kind regards
