How to improve liver function results

Hi

I was due to start chemotherapy today but this has been postponed as my liver function test wasn't as good as they'd like it to be. Apparently it has gone down since it was last taken before I had a lumpectomy at the end of April.

The nurse who I spoke to from the chemo unit said to drink at least 2 litres of water a day but I was wondering if you had any other recommendations as to how I can make sure the LFT is back in the correct range when I have my blood test on Friday.

Thanks a lot for any tips you can suggest

Thanks for your question, I can see from your profile that you’ve now had a diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer. I read that you’ve had surgery, and I hope that you are recovering well.

It must have been difficult to hear that your liver function test wasn’t at a good enough level for your chemotherapy to start. It’s frustrating and disappointing when you have been preparing to start your treatment and something out with your control changes the plan.

Liver function tests measure lots of different things within the one blood test. The liver carries out so many different functions it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what has caused a problem to occur. It can also sometimes just be an anomaly that reverts to normal range relatively quickly.

The best thing that you can do in the short term is as the nurse said drink plenty of water, light activity and fresh fruit and veg in your diet. I know that it sounds simple, but your liver will often do the work itself with this type of support from you.

I hope this is helpful and that your results improve enough to allow your chemotherapy to start soon.

    Best wishes,
