Hello, I hope you may be able to help me. I was diagnosed with Fallopian tube cancer mid March following surgery. I was told by the consultant I needed further surgery to stage the cancer and it needed to be done within 4 weeks. I was told this needed to be done at another hospital by robotic surgery.  I was offered surgery on the 5th of May but my mother died suddenly and I wanted to go to the funeral. I explained this and was told I’d be offered another date.

I hadn’t heard anything from the hospital so called the consultant secretary who said my surgery was now pencilled in for 16th of June. I was upset it was taking so long especially as I’d had my pre op assessment on 27th April.

I still hadn’t had confirmation of that date so I called the secretary again today and now told my surgery will be the 30th June.

I am so upset I don’t want the surgery anymore. I haven’t had any contact from the hospital in all this time regarding treatment and have not even met the oncologist as I was told I’ll need chemotherapy.

can you tell me if this is normal to be delayed constantly with treatment

thank you

  • Hi Sweepy

Thanks for getting in touch. Welcome to the online community.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Firstly, I would like to say how sorry I am to hear about the sudden loss of your mother. It must have been a shock for you especially if you had no previous warning of an illness.

When a parent dies suddenly it can cause a range of emotions especially if you’re unwell too. I can see you haven’t joined any of our online forums. You may find our online Bereavement support group helpful to look at.

I can fully understand your concern regarding your delayed surgery appointment and the impact it’s having on you emotionally, especially as you’re now considering not having any cancer surgery in the future. Fallopian Cancer is rare and depending on the cancer stage, surgery is one of the main treatment options available.

Sometimes, delays to cancer treatment are inevitable for a number reasons. Within the UK the cancer waiting times vary between nations. Only your hospital team can give you the cause for the delays to your treatment.

I would consider contacting the secretary again to see if you could speak to the consultant directly to find out the reason why the surgery dates keep changing. Especially as it was already pre-planned, and you have already been pre-assessed for your surgery.

You could also contact your cancer nurse specialist (CNS). They are the link between yourself and the team including the oncologist. Their specific role is to support you and talk through any concerns you have.

PALS is another source you could contact within your local hospital. They are there to help with any health-related concerns you may have. This link will able to help you find the services local to you.

You may find Ovacome have a support service which you might find helpful to contact for further advice. Or you could give us a call on the support line, so that we can support you more and answer any further questions you may have.

I hope this information is helpful, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if there is anything else, we can help you with.

    Best Wishes

    Ref/HW
