Terminal illness definition

Hi there, I have had polycythaemia for 8 years and have just switched to Hydroxycarbamide as venesection and anagrelide (current treatment) no longer working,  symptoms have become worse, spleen almost double original size now and I've just had a second bone marrow biopsy.

My first bone marrow biopsy (about 14 months ago) showed grade 2-3 fibrosis, so it was felt I was somewhat on the cusp of myleofibrosis, but hoping to keep it at bay. I have a new haematologist with a slighlty more rigorous approach, hence the start on hydroxycarbamide.

I have been exploring whether I may have some insurance cover, as I have a Life insurance and terminal illness policy. Lots of small print to read, but before this, could I ask initially if you could clarify whether Polycythaemia / Myleofibrosis is considered a terminal illness?

Many thanks

Caroline

  • Hi CarolineA,

Welcome to the online community. My name is Anne and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses from the Support Line. I see you have joined a few of our groups already. I hope you find them both welcoming and supportive.

I’m sorry to read that your symptoms have started to worsen and understand you have now started on Hydroxycarbamide. I hope you aren’t experiencing too many side effects from it.

As you mentioned, sometimes polycythaemia can progress to myelofibrosis. This is where the bone marrow becomes scarred and less able to produce blood cells.

It’s very difficult to answer your question regarding whether or not your diagnosis would be classed as terminal, I’m afraid. You would need to speak to your Consultant for clarification with this as they are best placed to advise on your own individual situation. We do have Financial Guidance Advisors on the Support Line and it may be worthwhile also having a chat with them. They are available Monday to Friday 8am-6pm and can help with matters such as the process of accessing insurance policies.

I hope this information is helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if there is anything else we can help with.

    Best wishes,

Anne - Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
