Radiotherapy following a large hematoma in my breast

Hello, I´m due to see my oncologist on Thursday to discuss the results of my operation (took place on 31st March) and to discuss the next steps in terms of treatment. I´ve been told that it will probably be radiotherapy and I know usually this happens a month after the op.

However, I developed a large hematoma post op which caused a lot of swelling and then bleeding which I had to go back to hospital for. It´s not bleeding anymore and the swelling is less but after seeing the surgeon today for my post op check up, he wants me to come back again on Tues to see how it is as it´s still not 100%. I´d say more like 50% ;)

So my question is will my radiotherapy likely be delayed due to the continued swelling in my breast and the complications I´ve had post op and if so, will that cause problems?

Thanks for reading.

  • Hi Doria. Welcome to the online community. My name is Anne and I’m one of the Nurses from the Support Line. I see you are already a member of the breast cancer forum. I hope you find it helpful connecting with others in a similar situation.

I’m sorry to read you have had such difficulties following your surgery. Occasionally, blood collects in the tissues around the wound area and causes pain and swelling known as a ‘haematoma’. This often goes away by itself but can sometimes take several weeks. Sometimes further intervention is needed where the Surgeon may wish to draw the blood off using a needle and syringe.

Radiotherapy is generally given 4-6 weeks after surgery. However, there are occasions when post-surgery complications may result in postponing radiotherapy. We would suggest that you discuss the possibility of this with your team at your next appointment. You should be allocated your own Clinical Nurse Specialist or Breast Care Nurse and it may be worthwhile mentioning your concerns to them.

It may be helpful to speak to one of our Nurses on the Support Line. We are available 7 days a week, from 8am to 8pm.

Take care, Doria, and please don’t hesitate to get back in touch with us.
