I did try to click on ask a nurse but their does not seem to be a link on my page ,the + link to chat , & leave a  question.

I'm wanting to find out if there's are special headwear other than hats ie'  headscarf that have UV protection?

I have one headscarf but I think it's just a standard one.

Can you put suncream on your head , I'm slowly going bald.

Thanks

  • Hi Etna

Thanks for getting in touch. Welcome to the online community. I can see you have joined several of our groups including the breast cancer forum and the under 50’s forum. I hope you’re finding them helpful.

It’s understandable you have concerns about the sun and UV protection. Looking after your skin is always important especially if your undergoing or had cancer treatment. As treatments can increase your sensitivity to the sun which can cause you to burn more easily.

Sunscreen can be used to all areas of your skin that are exposed to the sun including the scalp. You need one that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays and applied at least 15 mins before going outdoors. It’s also best to try to avoid outdoor activities between 11am and 3pm when the UV rays are at their strongest.

Hair loss is a common side-effect of treatment for many people. You might find it helpful to wear a wide brimmed hat which also offers protection to your face, ears and neck. Cancer Hair Care offer a range of advice on scarves and, hats and tips on  scalp care. Cancer Research UK also provide a recommended list of specialist suppliers.

Look Good feel better offer free practical hair loss workshops which might also be useful to look at.

I hope this information has been helpful, but if you need further support please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.
