Hi Alpacino
Thank you for getting in touch. My name is Isobel and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan support line.
I can see from your profile that you have joined a few groups I hope that you find these a good support.
It is only natural that you would have questions about your treatment and the benefits and downside of holding onto the drug.
You say that you started your treatment last week, I hope this went well.
When you were having the treatment, you may have been asked to keep the drug in your bladder for up to 2 hours, and change position frequently. This is to ensure that the drug reaches the whole of your bladder. The team who are looking after you will give you tailored instructions for your situation.
Generally it is advised that after you go home following this treatment you should drink lots of fluids, this will clear the drug from your system. I see that my colleague has sent you a link to the British Association of Urological Surgeons leaflet, I hope you found this helpful.
The amount of time the drug is held in the bladder is based on guidelines and the results of clinical trials. Your team will look at your individual situation when deciding the best way to give your treatment.
The treatment that you are having will be carefully monitored to avoid any potential side effects. I have included this information that may also be useful for you.
It is important that you follow the instructions and guidelines that have been given by your team. It may also be beneficial to talk to them about this.
I hope this is helpful, please do not hesitate to contact us again if you have any further questions
Best wishes
Isobel Y, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
