i have DCIS in 2 places which at last mammogram (May 21) had not become invasive. i've been waiting for an operation (WLE) for 2 years. i think i might be looking at a mastectomy & would like some guidance as what to expect, particularly post-operatively. i've already had one operation in the other breast & now have lymphodema & i know that having an operation will increase that.  thanks.

    Dear Justine,

Thanks for getting in touch with us and welcome to our online community.  I’m Sarah, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists at Macmillan.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that you have been waiting so long for your (WLE).  There are lots of things to consider when making a treatment decision.  Your Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) should be able to support your decision and discuss the pro’s and cons of the treatment options.  One advantage of mastectomy might be that you do not require radiotherapy, but this is something your clinical team can confirm.

Knowing what to expect can help.  Although recovery varies for everyone after surgery, there can be certain things to look out for including; pain management, surgical drains, post-operative exercises, monitoring for signs of infections, haematoma, seroma and lymphoedema. Your team at the hospital would guide you and help manage any complications associated with your surgery.

As you mentioned Lymphoedema can develop.  This can happen months or even years after cancer treatment. It can happen anywhere in the body, but the most common places for lymphoedema to develop are in the arm or leg.

Late effects of cancer treatment can be challenging and have an impact on you both physically and emotionally.  Getting emotional support can help aid your recovery. Talking to someone who has been affected by cancer such as the “someone like me” service can also help.

Please get back in touch if you have any other questions.

     Kind regards

Sarah H, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
