My partner has been told that he has kidney cancer and spreaded to lungs. Now he's going to start treatment in two weeks. Now I was wondering if this will cure it.

  • Hi Netty,

Thank you for getting in touch with Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is Anne and I’m one of the Nurses from the Support Line. Welcome to our online community. I see you have already joined the Family and Friends forum. I hope you find it helpful and supportive.

I’m sorry to hear of your partner’s recent diagnosis. This must be a worrying time for you both. You mentioned that the cancer has spread to his lungs. You may hear this being described as stage 4 or advanced kidney cancer. In this situation, several different treatment options may be offered. The aim of some of these treatments are to stop or slow the growth of the cancer for months or sometimes years. We have a booklet called Understanding Kidney Cancer which you may find helpful.

It might be a good idea for your partner to get in touch with his Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Hospital to discuss his treatment further. They are best placed to chat about his own individual situation and prognosis and would be able to explain what the aim of his treatments are. Cancer Research UK has general information on survival statistics but no-one can say for sure how long anyone will survive. This depends how well he responds to treatment.

I hope this information has been helpful, Netty. Please don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and get in touch if you feel you might benefit from chatting to one of our Nurses.

    Take care for now,

Anne - Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
