I am booked in this afternoon at 1600hrs for  my third Hormone Implant.  I am booked into have a PET-CT Scan on Friday of this week.

There are 50 hourse between the time of the implant and the tie of the scan.

My question is:  will the radioactive Pet scan have an adverse efeect on the implant, and should I cancel the implant (which is already 5 days overdue) until after I have the PET CT scan>

I do not want to postpone the Scan, as I have been waiting for some time to have it.

  • Dear PADV,

Thanks very much for getting in touch and welcome to our online community, I hope you find it supportive. My name is Jo and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

The radiotracer injected during he scan becomes less radioactive very quickly and is usually passed out of the body within a few hours. Therefore the only recommendation/precautions that are advised for people following a PET-CT scan is to avoid people who are pregnant, babies and young children for 6 hours, as there is a very small risk that the low levels of radiation could cause them harm. If you have sedation for the scan, then you would not be able to drive yourself home and it is advised that someone stay with you overnight.

I have been unable to find any evidence that suggests that there is any interaction between having a PET-CT scan and hormone implant injections. If you have any concerns about this, we’d recommend discussing it with you doctor or nurse when you go for your appointment.

    Best wishes,

    Jo, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
