Uti

Hi

I had TURBT 4 weeks ago .

Two weeks later I had a urine infection. I’m worried having one so quickly might mean I still have cancer.

my gp seems very busy and doesn’t even discuss my cancer diagnosis with me.

I had 9 uti infections in 2 years before cancer diagnosis and my gp never thought to send me for cystoscopy.

In November I rang and spoke to another gp who straight away sent me for the test.

I thank her so much for doing that as I would still be being treated for urine infections. But again I’m on antibiotics that again don’t appear to be working..

I just wondered if you have any information that might help.

Thank you

  • Hi Waffledog,

Thanks for getting in touch. It’s good to see from your profile, that you are being supported by our online bladder cancer forum.

Unfortunately, some people may get a urine infection after TURBT. This can happen in hospital or after you go home.

We would recommend that your symptoms are assessed. This is because you still have an infection despite antibiotic treatment.

It’s important to let your GP or hospital team know that you still have an infection.

As well as testing your urine for infection, they can send a sample to the labs for more thorough testing. This helps to identify the best antibiotic to use.

You should call NHS 111 for advice straight away if you have a UTI and:

    • a very high temperature, or feeling hot and shivery
    • a very low temperature below 36C
    • are confused, drowsy or have difficulty speaking
    • have not been for a pee all day
    • have pain in the lower tummy or in the back, just under the ribs
    • can see blood in your pee

These symptoms suggest a kidney infection, which can be serious if it's not treated.111 will tell you what to do. They can arrange a phone call from a nurse or doctor if you need one.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Best wishes,
