Some Rectal blood

Hello

I had my operation for bowel cancer on 26/11/21 and have a permanent stoma and colostomy bag.  Before I left hospital I had a time when I went to the loo and noticed I was bleeding from my bottom.  A nurse came and examined then told my dr who said it was ok not to worry and sometimes happens.,

After I came home I have had a few episodes in January and then I had nothing for last 4 weeks, but this weekend I had a very active stoma - I think because I am now on chemo and when changing pouch had urge to 'poo' and could feel myself bearing down.  I then wiped and noticed again I was bleeding.  A small clot followed by bright red blood.   It was easily wiped away so not talking loads of blood but it has happened twice more this weekend.  I almost feel like I have a pile before it bleeds, or, as said a poo there!

I have read a lot and been told it is normal to have a mucus discharge, which I have not had, or at least if I have it is not obvious!

Can you advise please I am so concerned

Thank you for reaching out for support and advice.

You are right to say that it is normal to experience a rectal discharge and to pass clear or putty coloured mucus from the anus.

Whenever a new symptom develops, we always advise for you to speak to your healthcare team.  This is because they have access to your medical notes and can blood test results, whereas here on the support line we do not have that information.

Rectal discharge which is blood or mucous streaked with blood should be discussed with either your GP or consultant as it may be an indication of inflammation or infection.  As you are on chemotherapy you will also have access to the chemotherapy nurses, they should have given you a telephone number to call if you are unwell.  It would be appropriate to call them and let them know about the bleeding from your rectum.

    Take care,

    Rae, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist.
