Kidney cancer

I’ve posted a couple of things about my situation in the kidney C forum, but I’d like an answer to a simple question: last week I was told by the oncologist that my tumour/s have stopped growing. I was diagnosed last July ‘21, with a kidney tumour 45x50mm and despite a number of CT scans (last one 31.12.21) they tell me they’ve stopped growing. This appeared after a scan in October ‘20 so had grown from zero to that 45x50 the following July. Is this possible? Likely, credible? I’ve never heard of any tumour stopping growing without any treatment.

  • Dear MuttleyBC

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community. My name is Isobel and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

It’s good to see you have joined the kidney cancer forum, I hope that you are finding this support helpful.

You ask if it is credible, likely that your tumours have stopped growing, or can be stable as your kidney cancer appears to be at this stage. This does and can happen even without treatment. In this situation your team would want to continue to monitor not only your tumour size but your symptoms as well.

As we are not part of the NHS we do not have access to your medical records, we can only give general information, and we would recommend that you speak to your specialist about this. They will be able to explain in more detail what is happening with your tumours. It is good to see that you are being monitored and your specialist has a plan for this.

Sometimes talking through things can also help, our information nurses will be more than happy to support you, so please don’t hesitate in calling us.

    Best wishes
