Hi, I have uterine sarcoma with abdominal spread and lung disease. I have surgery booked for the 2nd for pelvic clearance.  The team were keen to do a lung biopsy pre surgery which I had 10 days ago but the results have been delayed. Concerned about what different histologies would mean for my treatment.  I previously had breast cancer so that's a possibility. More than a bit confused.

  • Hi Nanci,

Thank you for getting in touch with us, my name is Annerose and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support line.

I am sorry to read about your new diagnosis, and I am glad to see that you have joined our soft tissue sarcoma forum. The support you could get from the online community can be invaluable.

We understand how difficult it can be to wait for test results, in many cases it is the hardest thing and very much out of our control.

I understand your concerns are about what different histopathologies would mean for your treatment.

By having a lung biopsy, your team will be trying to find out what has caused the lung lesions. You mentioned you had breast cancer in the past, and I feel that you know there could be a possibility of the lung lesion being secondary breast cancer as well as from the sarcoma.

I understand the confusion this can bring. Secondary breast cancer will have a slightly different treatment approach then sarcoma. That is why it is important to get as much information for your team as possible, and the biopsy will help your team make these decisions about treatment after surgery.

Sarcoma Uk have some good information on all aspects of Sarcoma which you might find is a useful resource.

Having a chat with your Clinical Nurse Specialist might also help you to understand what might be ahead, and what impact the result might have on your treatment.

I hope this has been useful, sometimes people find talking to one of our nurses directly can be helpful too. We are available on the Support line 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm. Please don’t hesitate and get back in touch.
