I had treatment for prostate cancer 5 years ago. I had brachytherapy which was suggested by the surgeon. The question I want to ask is about the side effects after the operation, I am suffering with a discharge from the rear I am having to wear pads it has been going on for a couple of years or so, will I ever get back to normal or will I have it for the rest of my life. I can't seem to get anywhere I have been to my GP to ask the same question with no result. Any help I would be very grateful.

Kevin

  • Hi Kevin

Thanks for getting in touch, and welcome to our online community.

Our forums for people affected by prostate cancer and also life after cancer  might be helpful to join. Sharing your experience and finding out how others have coped in similar circumstances can be invaluable.

Though treatment is given with the aim of cure there can be side effects that can be either long or short-term problems. We have this booklet with information about managing some of these symptoms , including bowel changes.

You say you have been in contact with your GP about this, but I’m not sure if you are still being followed up by the urology team. However, it may be an idea to ask about a referral with a gastroenterologist that has a specialist interest in radiation related side effects. This is because there can be a number of different reasons for bowel symptoms after treatment. Because of this there may be a need for some specialist input to see if a specific reason can be found in your case.

There is an organisation called the  Pelvic Radiation Disease Association (PDRA) that might be worth contacting. They might be able to advise of a gastroenterology team near to you for a possible assessment.

I hope this helps and you are able to get some help to improve your situation soon

If we can help with further information, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch

Take care, Linda (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
