Dear Nurse

After discussions with doctors, it turns out that I have a very high chance of getting cancer. I am thinking about being pre-emptive and getting surgery before cancer gets me.

Do you have any words of advice on this type of concern? Can you point me to information / groups I should know about?

Many thanks

  • Dear Duchess,

Thank you for getting in touch, and welcome to our online community.

From what you write I’m not sure if you have tested positive for a gene mutation or whether you have been advised of a risk of developing a specific type of cancer due to family history. It may be helpful to share this with us, so we are not second guessing your situation. This is so we can offer you the right information and guidance specific to your circumstances.

If you would like to respond here, or consider calling us on 0808 800 00 00, we’d be happy to see how we can help.

In the meantime the World Cancer Research Fund have this guidance about risk reduction measures.  Though we can’t influence our genetic makeup, this is only one part of the picture, we can make healthy choices that positively affect our life and general well-being

Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch with us

Best wishes, Linda (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
