I am desperately trying to make a decision regarding switching from Letrozole to tamoxifen. I initially started on Anastrozole in Jan 2020, but due to side effects, I had a break and switched to letrozole in Nov 21 after consultation with my oncologist. I am now in a bad place, struggling to walk because of the pain in my legs which is really affecting my mental health.
I was told that other than letrozole the next change would be tamoxifen. I realise that letrozole is probably the best option for my age, 59 close to 60 and post menopausal.
I would need to be on tamoxifen for longer and already struggling with weight gain. However, if the change would help with alleviating the pain in my legs, I should be able to exercise better. I am so confused. I have read so much about side effects of both types of pills but, I don't seem to be in the right state of mind to make an informed decision. I also know that everyone reacts differently to the medication so can only comment on their own  experience, but sometimes, I just wonder whether stopping it altogether would be a better option, but then I think of my family. I am just so bewildered.
Thank you for listening to me.

  • Hi Cluck

Thanks for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support and welcome to the online community.

I’m sorry to read that you have been having side effects from your hormone therapy.

It’s not uncommon for people to struggle with the side effects of their hormone treatment.

However, it is difficult for nurses on this platform to advise on any changes to your medication.

There may be ways to improve your symptoms or your cancer specialist may suggest that you change brands of the drug as this can help with side effects.

Unfortunately, there’s no way of predicting whether this will make a difference but may be worth discussing if this may be an option for you.

As side effects are putting you off taking your hormone therapy, it’s important to talk with your cancer specialist before making any decisions to stop it.

I see from your profile that you have joined our online breast cancer group. Many people find the peer support of others in similar circumstances reassuring to have.

As well as the above support, Breast Cancer Now have a someone like me’ service where you have the support of someone who has also been through a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Maggie’s also offer some emotional advice and online courses that can help anyone affected with cancer.

Our number is 0808 808 0000 and we are open 7 days a week from 8am till 8pm.

Please feel free to get back in touch if we can help with anything else.

    Best wishes

    Annemarie
