Hi there,
My Mum's just been diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer and is on a liquid diet. It seems the more cals she manages, the more mucus she has overnight and the next day.
Do you have any advice on dealing with the mucus production?
Fiona

Hi Fiona2022,
Thanks for posting your question. I’m sorry to hear about your mum’s recent advanced stomach cancer diagnosis.
You don’t mention if your mum is on any new medication or treatment. As these things can contribute to increased mucus production and excess/ thick saliva. Sometimes, certain types of stomach cancer, it may be the tumour causing increased mucus secretions.
Trying to stay well hydrated can help to thin the mucus down whist some medications can help reduce the production of mucus. If saliva is thick and stingy then regular mouth wash and saliva replacement gel/sprays can help.
It would be helpful to give the cancer team or GP a call to let them know what’s been happening and that your mum is finding this difficult to cope with. They know about your mum’s specific diagnosis and will be able to tell you what they think is causing this and what may help. Depending on the cause there are different ways to manage this and make your mum more comfortable.
It may also help to ask if your mum can be referred to the community palliative care team. They specialise in managing complex symptoms at home.
Sorry we’re not able to give you more specific information.
Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have any more questions.
Best wishes,
Amy (Macmillan Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
