Hi. Got this happening tomorrow before op later. Is it really painful, pretty scared?

  • Hi Gander,

Thank you for getting in touch with us. I’m Alison one of the Cancer Information Nurses who works on the support line here at Macmillan.

Going for further tests and investigations can be scary, and I can only imagine how you’re feeling just now.

To offer some reassurance, the dye they inject shouldn’t cause any pain, and they should numb the injection site. You can read more about the sentinel node biopsy here on Breast Cancer Now. They explain about the procedure and what to expect afterwards.

It’s only natural that you’ll feel scared and anxious about your tests and surgery. Your nurses and doctors at the hospital should explain what will happen and let you voice any concerns you have. Some people find practising relaxation techniques can help manage these feelings, particularly in stressful situations like hospital. Headspace is an app that you can access via Penny Brohn which can also offer meditation techniques for different situations.

You might feel that talking through your worries and concerns can help. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call if you’d like someone to talk to.

I wish you all the best with your surgery tomorrow.

    Best wishes
