Hello!

My mum has recently been diagnosed with stage 3c1 Cervical Cancer, and I don't really want to pressure her for information, so is there anything you could possibly tell me? Good or bad... So I know?

She is undergoing Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy, and then will have internal radiotherapy, but what is the survival rate is the biggest thing I want to know... And if in the nicest way possible, it's curable? Because I'm so worried about her, and don't want to ask her these questions...

Thank you, Sophie.

  • Hi Soph_y10,

Welcome to the online community. I’m Lorna one of the Cancer Information nurse Specialists.

It’s understandable you feel anxious and worried about your mum’s prognosis and treatment she is having for cervical cancer. It can also be difficult to know what to say at times too.

When someone is diagnosed with cervical cancer the Doctor will look at what type and grade of cells involved, and the stage of cancer. Stage of cancer tells us how big the cancer is and where it is. It’s then decided what treatment would be best for your mum. Usually you would expect to have a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy (chemoradiotherapy) for stage 3 cervical cancer. This will also involve a boost of internal radiotherapy called Brachytherapy.

Survival depends on many factors and no one can say how long anyone has to live, or how they will respond to their treatment. It’s important to remember that general survival rates and statistics are based on large groups of people, they don’t tell you what will happen in individual cases. Your mum’s Consultant may have more information about this, or your mum may already know if she has asked.

It can be a very distressing time for you all. It might help to talk to others who know how you are feeling on our friends and family forum. Or you could speak to us directly on 0808 808 0000 or webchat.

I hope you have found this information helpful, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have any more questions,

    Best Wishes,

    Lorna
