Hi there,

im just coming into my 4th year remission from Breast cancer, my treatment involved surgery and also the testing of the lymph nodes in the armpit during surgery which came back as all clear. I have a scar under the armpit which all of a sudden has become real itchy.
is this something I should be concerned about or is it a Norma, post surgery healing of the scar - just seems a long time ago for it to start itching…

many thanks in advance

  • Hi Hopeandlight22

Thanks for getting in touch I’m Fiona one of the Cancer Information nurse Specialists.. Scars can itch for many different reasons and it can happen a long time after surgery. Sometimes simple things like gaining or losing weight can irritate scars or dry skin and a new deodorant.

If it’s persistent or the skin feels thicker, looks red or there’s any swelling then it would be a good idea to chat to your team at the hospital or GP about it as well. It’s usually a good plan to get checked out anyway as its new and worrying you. No one will be annoyed at you for getting in touch, we encourage reporting of anything that feels a bit different to you.

I hope this is helpful. If you want to talk things through, then please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are open 7 days a week from 8am till 8pm. Our number is 0808 808 0000.

    Best wishes,
