  • Hi Endometr,

Thanks for getting in touch. I am sorry to read all your mum has been through recently. This must be a worrying time for you all wondering what may be happening.

Anaemia can be caused by many reasons. Red blood cells help carry oxygen throughout the body. Anaemia symptoms can leave a person feeling tired, weak, and short of breath. There are many reasons why a person may develop anaemia. It can be down to something as simple as diet, the after effects of an illness, medications or it may sometimes be a sign of another underlying health condition.

It is reassuring to read that your mums recent bone marrow biopsy could find no abnormalities. If a person continues to have low blood levels they may need further tests and investigations (no hyperlink here) to fully understand what may be happening.

From this type of platform, it is difficult for us to be able to advise what may be the cause of your mum’s recent anaemia. It is important that your mum and family discuss your concerns with her specialist at the hospital or GP. They can discuss what they feel may be happening, what further tests may be needed and how they will support your mum. Your mum always has the right to question what may be happening with her care.

It is important that while your mum is at home and has any new or worsening symptoms such as bleeding, tiredness, a paler complexion, shortness of breath or headaches to her specialist team or GP urgently. If she is unable to contact her doctors, she can also call 111/999 for advice and support. These symptoms could be a sign that she has become more anaemic and may require treatment for this.

Wishing you all well at this difficult time.
